Stress Fact: Oats make an ideal supper time snack as they help to create feelings of calm making you feel sleepy.
The Science: Oats are a slow-releasing starchy carbohydrate which break down in glucose, causing the release of insulin. Insulin helps the protein tryptophan make its way to the brain where it’s converted to the serotonin which can help to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and insomnia.
Bedtime Recipe: This baked oats recipe makes an ideal snack before bed as it’s both warming and fairly light on the stomach.
The recipe combines oats with milk which provides calcium and also bananas which are a great source of potassium which helps muscles to relax. The cocoa and dark chocolate pieces add a lovely chocolatey flavour and cocoa is known for reducing levels of stress, as well as adding a comforting taste.
