Tasty Mornflake products have just become a little greener - thanks to the use of fully Segregated Sustainable Palm Oil from sustainable plantations.
The company has been a member of the roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (www.rspo.org) calling for the environmentally-friendly production of this crucial crop since 2010, and since this date have only used "Mass Balance" Sustainable Palm Oil in its products.
Spokeswoman Catherine Sadler: "Palm oil is an essential ingredient in products such as our granola where it is used as a binding agent and to give the product its fantastic texture.
"Sadly in a lot of industries it is sourced unsustainably, leading to deforestation.
"Vast areas of rainforest are slashed and burned each year to make way for palm oil plantations. Large scale deforestation contributes to climate change and kills wildlife in the process.
"It is pushing orang-utans to extinction and as company we are doing our bit to make change.
"Mornflake were the first breakfast cereal manufacturer in the UK to be independently audited and certified for the supply of breakfast cereals containing certified sustainable palm oil.
"Mass Balance" is a method used to encourage the development of sustainable systems, and this means Mornflake have been supporting this transition
"As of the middle of November 2013 Mornflake have managed to secure supplies of fully Segregated Sustainable Palm Oil - this system guarantees that the palm oil used is only ever supplied from fully audited and certified plantations, palm oil processors and refineries
"We believe that we are the first European breakfast cereal producer to make the transition to fully Segregated Sustainable Palm."
Mornflake remains committed to becoming a carbon-neutral business. In Scotland it uses windmills to power milling machines.
The first shipment of fully Segregated Sustainable Palm Oil arrived at its Crewe headquarters on 22ndNovember 2013 and will be replaced regularly.
