Congratulations to our marketing manager Richard Jones (pictured) after completing his first Virgin London Marathon in a highly commendable 4 hours and 15 minutes yesterday.
An old knee injury came back to haunt Richard, 42, in the final weeks of his training and kicked in hard in the last 10 miles of the marathon.
He said: "It's a lottery where you start the marathon. I was placed at Gate 9, far back from the start line and behind the charity runners and fancy dress entrants.
"They weren't marathon die-hards just big-hearted people raising what they could for their chosen causes. I found them quite inspirational, especially those running in memory of loved ones.
"The crowds were also fantastic, cheering every step of the way. They gave sweets and water, willing everyone past the finish line. It was quite emotional and when my knee started to play up after 16 miles, I was just thrilled to get past the finish line."
Richard was fuelled by a diet of Mornflake porridge and pasta throughout his several months of training for the event.
He was also spurred on by colleagues who, through sponsorship, have helped him raise more than £2,000 which is to be split between Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer charities.
