Sustainability

We've always understood the importance of protecting our environment and realise we need to work with Mother Nature, not against her. We depend on the land to grow our Oats and have always looked to use nature's natural power to help us mill them. In 1675 it was water that turned our Mill stones and today our Mill in Scotland is Britain's first modern day windmill. We also try and never throw anything away, waste is such a horrible word. The Oat husk that isn't suitable for us humans is turned in to food for animals, from horses to hamsters. All our cardboard boxes are reused and recycled, even stones and straw that come in on our farmers tractors are collected and returned as bedding and gravel. However there's always more to do and we're still working hard to reduce the amount of energy we use and believe we can return to being 100% sustainable, just like 1675. Here are a few things we've achieved so far and things we're still working on!

Buy British

We grow fantastic Oats in Britain so why try and look anywhere else? Wherever possible we grow all our oats in the UK ensuring they're grown to the Red Tractor Assured Combinable Crop Scheme (ACCS) standards. The ACCS scheme, like us, is working to ensure the sustainability of farming practices. It's also seeking recognition as a scheme under the Renewable Energy Directive, which is good.

To further support British farmers and the UK Oat crop we contract grow lots of our Oats on contract with UK farmers thus not only ensuring amazingly fantastic oats year after year but also the sustainable future of the UK oat crop and the farmers that grow them.

As Nature Intended

Having milled Organic Oats in the UK for over 40 years we continue to actively support the Organic movement and farming practices. We also continue to avoid Genetically Modified Crops, their products and by-products. Nature creates some fantastic cereals, fruit, nuts and seeds and we believe they're best enjoyed as nature intended... so we don't add any artificial nasties but just leave them exactly as they are.

Packaging

Mornflake are committed to reducing packaging across all areas of our business. We are full members of the On Pack Recycling label (OPRL) scheme to ensure that clear and accurate packaging recycling information is provided to our customers / consumers.

Mornflake supports the use of recycled board and uses the latest barrier film technology in all our products to prevent the migration of inks in to food.

Waste

We use or recycle nearly everything from pallets & packaging to stones and straw. Only 0.01% of the 'waste' we produce is sent to landfill and we're striving to get this figure to zero.
